We are looking for an Associate Director-level Real World Data Scientist with a strong technical background and an exploratory mindset to join our data42 data science team. Your role is to come up with innovative ideas using AI/ML approaches to mine the RWD on the platform and uncover hidden patterns that can lead to new insights about the patient population, biomarkers or drug targets, ultimately leading to new discoveries that can lead to faster development of life-changing medicines.
As data42 serves the R&D continuum at Novartis, you will work with colleagues in Biomedical Research to champion the use of RWD in discovery, as well as colleagues embedded in the later stages of drug development such as Medical Affairs to innovate on solutions using RWD.
This is a unique role, with plenty of opportunities to learn and apply cutting edge AI/ML/data science and technological solutions across Research and Development, to come up with health insights and reimagine medicine.

About the Role
This role is all about understanding RWD and clinical data, serving science and innovation, connecting the right skills together to enable scientific insights and contribute to medical evidence generation with the use of RWD using cutting edge data science and AI tools. Being part of Biomedical Research, the vision is to empower and inspire Novartis’ Research and Development organizations by harnessing inter-connected multimodal and external data in our securely governed platform. You will be the key expert on the use of RWD for the Biomedical Research community, inspiring innovative use of the data to answer translational research questions using advanced quantitative methodologies. You will also be a key contributor to the medical affairs data and technology strategy, thus enabling priority enterprise projects. As a leader within data42, you will contribute to the continuous evolution of the data42 team with enthusiasm, cooperation and a collaborative attitude.
Major accountabilities but not limited to:
- Define, lead and execute innovative methodologies such as using AI models to mine RWD on data42 for exploratory analysis.
- Co-create and execute innovative data analytics solutions with key stakeholders across R&D
- Stay abreast on emergent applications, trends and insights, and positively drive development of advanced analytic capabilities to ensure data42 continuously evolves as a well-recognized platform that addresses the ever-changing data and analytic environment
- Develop strong internal and external partnerships to promote effective collaborations. Lead by example in promoting a collaborative and entrepreneurial culture and mindset. Be an agent for change and engage support for innovative ideas, methods, technologies, partnerships, and solutions
- Support data science communities in Biomedical Research to think through research questions that can benefit from the use of RWD. This may include feasibility analysis and developing machine learning models to mine RWD for insights.
- Support project ideation with Medical Affairs stakeholders to execute a data and technology strategy through integrating access to multimodal data (e.g. real-world data, clinical data, genomics, biomarkers, imaging) to support real world evidence generation, and applying innovative methods, models (e.g. in-silico trials), and technology
- Excellent communicator and advocate for data-driven decision-making to align with Novartis' overall strategy and improve patient care outcomes.
- Represent data42 externally at conferences
Ideal experience:
- PhD or MD with a quantitative discipline like computer science, physics, statistics or epidemiology with experience across disease areas and proven track record in AI/ML
- 5-8 years in quantitative science roles, with good understanding of the entire product value chain within the pharmaceutical industry.
- Strong data science background with proficiency with SQL, Python, R, Jupyter Notebooks etc
- Proven track record in providing impact with RWD applying advanced analytics as well as AI/ML
- Experience with AI/ML techniques to uncover scientific insights such as novel biomarkers in omics or imaging data in RWD.
- Experience and knowledge in evidence generation, including analyzing clinical and real-world data, and understanding evidence generation study methodologies.
- Track record of leading projects or teams at a strategic level involving multiple stakeholder groups or research initiatives
Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $160,300 and $297,700 per year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/25 through 12/31/25, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
